Prefabricated Timber Panels

Within the construction industry there are two main types of Prefabricated Timber Panelling systems, which are used regularly on both small and large scale projects throughout varied locations and climates, these are;

- Cross Laminated Timber Panels (CLT’s)

- Structurally Insulated Panels (SIP’s)

Timber is used as the main material of the structural elements due to it's sustainable resourcing qualities, as well as its thermal properties. The rapid fabrication process, along with cheap material selection means the whole production is cost effective, both to the manufacturer and client. The systems are factory produced (Pre-fabricated) and delivered to site as a unit to be mechanically manoeuvred into place, usually by crane.

Some of the governing reasons for choosing the application of these systems over other traditional construction include;

- Minimal waste
- Off site production
- Speed of construction process on site
- Capability to test designs before fixing on site - Sustainable
- Low embodied energy
- Airtight thermal envelope
- Longevity
- Fire resistant
- Fewer site personal required
- Quieter site for sensitive areas
- Safer method of construction on site
- Less transport of material needed to site

All of these qualities combine together to produce a unique structural envelope unlike any type of traditional construction could produce. It is becoming an increasingly popular product to build with, in various disciplines. With the global population increasing, resources depleating and a higher demand for energy savings; are prefabricated panels the rapid, cost effective, sustainable resource that will eventually lead the construction empire?
